(behind the scenes)VJ Exegesis

The AQUARIUM DISASTER, i really enjoyed filming this one. Probably because Mayu was pretty enjoyable to work with. So even even though its pretty inappropriate for a exegesis i want to give a shout out to Mayu!

For pre-production we came up with alot of ideas about what kind of film we were going to shoot. At once it had to have a interesting location, be simple but not boring, and work with the theme of disaster o matter how big or small the problem would have been. So we ended up with the idea of a missing person kind of film, where throughout clues are sprinkled throughout the film that kind of builds and builds the climax until the final reveal. Originally we were supposed to shoot the film at the zoo, but then we thought of many of the sound as setting problems that would have come up due to the differing zoo containments (and also the zoo is surprisingly expensive these days which is bad for struggling students like us!).

So instead we filmed at the city/aquarium which was easy enough, though we did end up running into some problems. To begin with the aquarium so actually a lot more dull then it sets out to be, in the film it looks like it is a nice fluro blue. BUT in reality it was more of dull kind of pale. Also we didn’t anticipate to much the idea of the ‘school holidays’ being in session so that made filming just a little harder. The story itself was fine but filming some of the clues within the aquarium setting became challenging, so some on the shoot pre production was again needed.

Though all of these problems ended up being quite small compared to our biggest problem which was the sound not recording. This was really heartbreaking in post as when we log and captured the footage and no sound came up we knew we had to start all the sound from scratch all over again. This was really challenging and required an almost ten hour day.

The end product of the film visually i was quite happy with, i think the blues and depth in color really look nice when we changed it in post. The story itself became a little confused at points but we originally didn’t set out to make it overly serious so it ended up being very light hearted which was nice.
The sound though…even though we worked so hard on it still came out rough ( i think the version on youtube is missing some sounds because they didn’t export properly). I think if i had had a week to work on purely the sound i could’ve come up with something alot more interesting and cohesive to the story.

So besides the sound i really did have a good time working on this film. actually filming it and putting it together was really enjoyable and was one of my first tastes into the realm of editing.

THESE NEXT FEW POSTS WILL KIND OF BE AN INSIGHT TO WHY I MADE THE FILMS I MADE.THIS ONE WILL BE ABOUT….

I HEART DRAWING

This is a post that really explains my earlier film i heart drawing, explaining why i made it and also why i found it as an avenue of expression.

Well to begin with as you can tell by the title of film i do love drawing. Its really one of the things that i feel passionate about, as alot of hobbies kinda stand for more of ‘glorified phases’ drawing has always kept with me. And in that sense i really wanted to make a short film about something i knew and could come up with alot of material for. If i did try and lie and make up a story that was overly emotional or kinda played out like a cliched ‘indie film’ i knew i wouldn’t have been satisfied with myself and wouldn’t really have wanted people to watch it.

When i took to making the film i approached in a sort of a four act kinda structure. The first act was kinda like a history lesson that fleshed out why i loved drawing and introduce the kind of light hearted feel to my film. The second act went into more of my personal information, though about this information didn’t really feel at all like i was vulnerable or giving too much of my really deep emotion away. It was more just to kind of get a grasp on what type of person aesthictally i was growing up in school.

The third act was probably the most personal and kind of expressed some of the heartaches in my life even if they were just glimpses. I didn’t really comfortable if i told the full stories of these events and i think it would’ve hurt the film more if i did.

And the last act was more about my future with drawing, what wanted to accomplish with my drawing and overall broader life. Which is funny though because as i was writing the script for this my mind kind of came up with a blank and i couldn’t think of anything to write. So i just went with my gut for recording and said what i feel (which turned out to not be much).

So my film is about drawing, which i kind of ended up being more about me. I really made this film with the intention for expressing myself and also about something i love. Though some of the films aesthetic qualities are very much so based around me i hope that people who watch it can really relate to it, even its not a hobby or a skill, even if its a person, a place, a certain song you like to listen to or anything. And i think people will find it interesting that though it might seem like such a minute aspect of your life you will find that alot of your qualities as a person have been shaped by it.

The Beast teaser

June 1, 2010

WOW its been awhile since I’ve done a post and for that I’m sorry. But to be fair my semester is coming to an end i have had a lot of work on my hands. One of which being the Video X group production of the beast. We filmed this project about 3 weeks ago, and since then i haven’t really seen anyone from the group or heard anything about the project. BUT now i have finally seen a teaser trailer for it and personally i must say it looks pretty awesome so far. A special applause is needed for Sanouk who has done the editing of the whole thing and from I’ve seen so far has done a great job.

So check the teaser here

And also i kinda prototype of a sequence here (not though that some parts might be cut the sound is still not 100% finished).

I’ll be sure to post the whole film here when its done. I will also post this music video i was working upon in another media production class!
Here we go buddy indeed!
